Trained in a State Hospital in a borough in New York City
Born and raised in the Bay Area, I arrived at the decision to pursue a profession in therapy after 12 years of teaching elementary school. I quickly realized that the emotional health and home lives of my students were impossible to separate from the classroom. I now work with individual adults of all ages on trauma processing (using EMDR), relational issues, parenting challenges, life transitions, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and the many ailments that come from both “big T” and “little t” trauma.
After earning my B.A. at Colorado College and teaching in Aurora, Colorado and the San Francisco Bay Area, I pursued my M.A. in Counseling Psychology from The Wright Institute. I worked as a school counselor with children and adolescents and feel great compassion for children and their families throughout the journey of school. I look forward to hearing from you!
Dr. Aw primary interest is the intersection between mental and physical health. Dr. Aw’s philosophy, one does not exist outside of the other. Furthermore, Depression and anxiety in patients who are also suffering from medical issues feels significantly worse, and it is his goal to get patients on the road to recovery.
I grew up a carpenter’s son and followed his example in my early adulthood. By my mid 20’s I began working with others by teaching guitar, after school sports, yoga, and meditation while continuing to work as a handyman. From 2012-2014 I was fortunate enough to be able to teach High School Psychology classes that included Adolescent Social Psychology, Intro to Psychology, and Positive Psychology. For my practicum in 2012 I spent a year at James Lick High School in East San Jose, CA working with individuals and groups. From 2013-2016 I was a community-based therapist meeting clients in their homes, at their schools, or in the community. I provided individual and family support throughout Santa Clara County. This was an invaluable training that allowed me to see what people would talk about in session, since I would be in their homes with them and often see the issues firsthand. In 2017 I worked at Brightquest Treatment Center in La Mesa, CA. This was an incredible experience. I worked in this residential facility with folks with severe psychiatric disorders that often also involved addiction. The intense nature of the treatment and regular interaction with clients provided a unique learning experience and genuine connections. I learned a great deal from the residential Milieu Therapy approach.
I also had the opportunity to work as a Military Family Life Counselor, supporting military service members and their families. I feel that I learned a lot and, since I was a Navy brat, I derived a great deal of meaning being able to give back to service members in this way.
Since 2018 I have been working in private practice helping children, teens, adults, and families in person and online. I continue to work on my professional development by studying, taking trainings, consulting with colleagues, and working to practice what I learn in a balanced way.
Not accepting couples... fully accepting you! I work exclusively with adults in individual therapy.
If you’ve been deep in the therapist scroll spiral, pause. If you’re ready to invest in yourself, welcome.
Wondering why you feel overwhelmed all the time? Why you can't stop worrying about everything? Or why you get so frustrated over small things? Let's talk about it. You don’t have to do it all alone. I work with adults navigating a wide range of challenges, including depression, anxiety, psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, trauma, grief, psychosis, suicidal thoughts, dual diagnoses, men’s issues, and life transitions. I also have experience supporting first responders, LGBTQ+ and BIPOC clients, student-athletes, and individuals exploring open or non-monogamous relationships.
Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or just not like yourself lately, you're not broken - and you’re not too much. Life can hit hard, and therapy can offer the space to slow down, be real, and reconnect with your strength.
I hold a Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Iowa with an emphasis in mental health, as well as a degree in criminology. This background allows me to approach your concerns with a holistic and informed perspective.
Together, we can create a space where you feel safe, heard, and empowered to move forward.
